Hestia was the goddess of the hearth in ancient Greece. She personified the instinct in the psyche that seeks to create and tend the sacred center. The goddess was symbolized by the round hearth, and her flame burned in the center of the home, the temple, and the ancient city. The lecture will explore the bi-valent energies inherent in this symbol, with an emphasis on both historic and contemporary psychological aspects of the perennial instinct to the sacred.

Janis Jennings, PhD, is a control-stage analytic candidate at the C.G. Jung Institute of Los Angeles. Her dissertation was entitled Hestia, Goddess of the Hearth: Fire at the Center.
