SUMMARY:The Collective Unconscious in the Age of Neuroscience: Severe Menta
l Illness and Jung in the 21st Century
DESCRIPTION:Is all psychosis the same? Depth psychology treats it as such\,
yet medical models of severe mental illness say different. While medicati
on can be a dirty word in Jungian circles\, some disorders cannot be treat
ed without it. Is there common ground? Can Jung’s bedrock notion of a co
llective unconscious coexist within scientific advances that have occurred
since his death? The answer is a resounding yes. This program will explor
e the remarkable prescience of Jung’s work\, how medical models actually
advance his theory\, and the challenges and opportunities for analytical
psychology moving forward.\n\nJoin us for a personal journey of enchantmen
t\, then disillusionment with Jungian practice through the presenter’s o
wn struggle with bipolar I disorder and psychosis. The research Dr. Durchs
lag will share was born out of the lived conundrum of reconciling medical
and depth psychological models of treatment. In the end\, her journey led
to a renewed and deeper connection to Carl Jung’s body of work.\n\nThis
program will allow participants to view these questions through an analysi
s of four autobiographical narratives\, including the presenter’s\, whic
h highlight the consistency of connection to numinous and transpersonal co
llective material. A brief overview of medications used in the treatment o
f severe mental illness will offer a vision of how this transcendent mater
ial appears to manifest at a physiological level\, and shed light on Jung
’s later exploration of synchronicity and the ultimate unity between psy
che and matter.\n\nLearning objectives:\n\n Define severe mental illness
from the perspective of both medical and depth psychological models.\n Us
ing case material\, identify challenges for depth psychology in regard to
bipolar I disorder and schizophrenia.\n Acquire a basic understanding of
current medications for the treatment of severe mental illness.\n Using c
ase material\, explain how severe mental illness aligns with basic tenets
of analytical psychology.\n Build dialogue related to human physiology an
 d a collective psyche.\n\nHallie Beth Durchslag\, PhD\, LISW-S\, lives in
 Cleveland Heights\, Ohio\, where she teaches\, writes\, and maintains a pr
ivate practice as a Jungian-based\, psychodynamic psychotherapist. She beg
an her career as a social worker in the arena of Community Development aft
er earning a Master of Science in Social Administration at Case Western Re
serve University (1999). Shifting toward a clinical practice in 2009\, she
earned her PhD in Clinical Psychology with an Emphasis in Depth Psycholog
y at Pacifica Graduate Institute (2015). Dr. Durchslag has an abiding inte
rest in the complexity of what makes us both human and transcendent beings
. Her research over the past 10 years has looked at this subject through t
he lens of severe mental illnesses and their physiological connection to J
ungian theory. Her book\, The Collective Unconscious in the Age of Neurosc
ience: Severe Mental Illness and Jung in the 21st Century (Routledge) was
released in July 2020. She maintains her commitment to the macro side of s
ocial work as the curator of The Anima Mundi Project\, which looks at soul
-based approaches to holistic personal development and community-building.
She is a Past-President and current Honorary Board member of the Jung Edu
cational Center of Cleveland.\nPurchase Hallie Durchslag’s book from Ama
