SUMMARY:Jung and the Art of Aging\, Part Two: A Jungian Approach to Aging
DESCRIPTION:Jung and the Art of Aging\n\nPart Two: A Jungian Approach to Ag
 ing\nPresented by\nLionel Corbett\, MD\nSunday\, 3 PM - 6 PM\, March 20th\
, 2016\nlink to audio file\nThis presentation will review some aspects of
successful aging and personality development in later life\, and discuss s
ome ways of maximizing one's potential at that time. Psychological and spi
ritual growth and creativity are independent of age and often continue unt
il very old age\, and it's a mistake to think of aging as a period of rele
ntless decline. One can grow into old age and not simply sink into it. Jun
gian psychology can make an important contribution to understanding the im
portance of this time of life for both the individual and society.\nSome o
f the developmental and spiritual tasks of later life are depicted in folk
lore and fairy tales\, so this discussion will include a range of stories
from around the world that illustrate these possibilities.\nCourse objecti
ves:\nCompare the view of old age as one of positive growth with the view
of old age as a period of decline.\nIdentify and analyze examples from fol
klore/fairy tales that refer to the spiritual tasks of later life.\nDr. Li
onel Corbett trained in medicine and psychiatry in England and as a Jungia
n Analyst at the C.G. Jung Institute of Chicago. His primary interests are
the religious function of the psyche\, especially the way in which person
al religious experience is relevant to individual psychology\; the develop
ment of psychotherapy as a spiritual practice\; and the interface of Jungi
an psychology and contemporary psychoanalytic thought. Dr. Corbett is a pr
ofessor of depth psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute\, in Santa Barb
ara\, California. He is the author of numerous professional papers and fo
ur books: Psyche and the Sacred\; The Religious Function of the Psyche\; T
he Sacred Cauldron: Psychotherapy as a Spiritual Practice\; and most recen
