Peace and tranquility are rarely the outcome of looking at our parental complexes. The instinctual behavior of our parents and the spiritual ideals of our heroes are both necessary on the path to enlightenment, but in between the two is a dangerous abyss in which we can lose ourselves. Paradoxically, here we can also find the essence of what it means to be human. Moments in personal analysis that are key to how these two themes interact and produce an experience of a new self will be explored.

J. Gordon Nelson, Ph.D.is a Jungian analyst in private practice in Santa Monica. He holds a special interest in the intersection between psychology and religion and has explored the work of Heinz Kohut extensively. He is a past president of the C. G. Jung Institute of Los Angeles and currently serves as Chair of the Institute’s certifying board.
